Doctoral Programme

PhD in Psychology

Thank you for inquiring about the PhD programme in Psychology at the School of Applied Human Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. A PhD is a major milestone in your life, and we are pleased that you are considering registering with us. In addition to a complement of qualified staff offering a wide range of expertise, we also offer a program of peer support and ongoing research methods training, to assist you in completing your doctoral study and thesis.

Our PhD application procedure is as follows: Students submit a proposed project title and a brief (max 1 page) description of the research to Prof Durrheim (see details below). You may use the “PhD Thesis Concept document” below to prepare your proposed project description. We review your concept document and inform you whether we are able to accommodate your request. The outcome depends on staff availability and expertise to supervise in your area.  If successful, you will be assigned a provisional supervisor who will help you prepare a provisional proposal. This proposal will be evaluated by Psychology PhD Committee. If successful, we will recommend your registration to the School Higher Degrees Committee. We encourage prospective PhD applicants to review staff interests on our website and to contact prospective supervisors before applying.
